Is It Time To Rethink Daniel Craig's 'James Bond' Style?

You've probably heard the news by now: Daniel Craig has finally (all but) accepted that $150 million offer to return as Bond (must have been a tough one that, Dan). Sure, he might have previously stated that he'd rather "slit his wrists" than reprise the role, but there you have it. He's back.

Some people may have preferred Hardy or even Emily Blunt for a fresh take on 007, but Dan's put in a good shift in the Aston Martin driving seat, and as long as he can refrain from jumping off a bridge or performing Hari Kiri before the cameras roll, then we're certain that he has plenty more manly stoicism and glacial charm to bring to the series.

But something has to change, Dan.

We need to broaden your wardrobe.

Make no mistake about it, Craig is easily one of the most stylish Bonds in the 007 canon, with a precise, monochromatic fashion sense that matches his 'strong and silent' portrayal of her Majesty's most reckless charge – but it's about time that Barbara Broccoli and co rediscovered the sense of fun that made Bond's choice of clothing so integral to the identity of each film.

After all, you can only gaze at so many beautiful grey suits and beautiful grey overcoats and beautiful grey... you get the picture, before audiences are going to start asking for something a bit... different?

We're not sure about you, but when we cast our minds back to the last three-or-so Bond films, they seem to blur into one cold, merino wool amalgamation of frigid Austrian mountains, black parkas, falsely-lit MI6 offices, gloomy Scottish moorland and sensible brogues (beautifully-made, of course). The clothes, much like the setting and storyline of the films, have become somewhat formulaic.

Daniel Craig in a beautiful grey suit. But where are the laughs?

Now we're not calling for a return to the sexist brand of Bond played by Sean Connery and Roger Moore, but what those films did do well was to create a sense of style that complimented the exotic action on screen. Back then it was Sean Connery swaggering about a beach in a Cuban collar shirt; now it's more like 007 in a sensible coat gets ready to catch the 08.17 into Waterloo, because he wants enough time to grab a coffee before that first meeting.

Sean Connery in a very 'IN' Cuban collar

Along with the potential death of the tie, the previously stringent rules surrounding menswear have grown increasingly more relaxed. Shoulders are unstructured; trainers are high-end; trousers are wide and shirts are printed. Business suits and black shoes look great, but 007 has always been a man in search of adventure.

We're not saying that 007 needs to infiltrate a nefarious syndicate of Supreme resellers or rock backless loafers while sipping a dry martini (just a chilled out vibe), but a bit of pattern on a shirt or a crop on a trouser wouldn't go amiss, you know?

James Bond has always been defined as much by what he wears as by what he does on screen, and if Dan's return is going to justify that mammoth payday then it might be in need of a refresh.

10 Movies We’re Looking Forward To: July 2017

It’s safe to say that June was a red-letter month at the movies. Wonder Woman exceeded expectations, quickly becoming the runaway hit of the summer and the highest-grossing DCEU release domestically, while other franchise entries like The Mummy — the intended launchpad for Universal’s monster-filled Dark Universe — and even Transformers: The Last Knight — also intended as a launching pad for a new era of the franchise — vastly underperformed in North America. Thankfully, smaller, critically acclaimed releases like It Comes at NightThe Beguiled, and The Big Sick filled the void, presenting startlingly original tales that reinvigorated the summer movie season ahead of the next batch of blockbusters. So let’s take a look at the some of the most notable releases hitting theaters this month.

So, as always, here are 10 films to check out in July 2017:

Although it is the sixth Spider-Man film to hit theaters in 15 years, Spider-Man: Homecoming is far more than just another big-screen interpretation of the friendly neighborhood webslinger. Director Jon Watts (Cop Car) brings Tom Holland’s Peter Parker from Captain America: Civil War into his own fully realized corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a supporting role for Robert Downey Jr.

The film sees Spidey go head-to-head with The Vulture (Michael Keaton), all the while balancing his high school life and trying to earn a spot alongside Tony Stark (Downey) and the Avengers. Considering the divisive reception to Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the studio needs this one to land if they hope to get their planned spinoffs underway. With Marvel Studios involved, we’re betting they can sleep soundly.

Check out the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

A Ghost Story (Release Date: July 7)

A24 may not be known for generating Hollywood’s most extravagant films, but the production and distribution house certainly is responsible for some of the most acclaimed and interesting films to come around in recent years, with Oscar winners like RoomMoonlight, and Ex Machina among its filmography. A Ghost Story could easily end up in the same league.

Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara headline this romantic drama from director David Lowery, who most recently re-imagined Disney’s Pete’s Dragon. The film — which is playing in limited release this month — deals with some heady themes, such as love and loss, and it has gained overwhelming praise since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. So it may be one to seek out.

War for the Planet of the Apes (Release Date: July 14)

Audiences and critics alike were taken by surprise when Rise of the Planet of the Apes redeemed the long-running sci-fi franchise in 2011, which had previously taken a hit from Tim Burton’s lackluster reboot a decade earlier. By going back to the beginning and with Andy Serkis’s genius motion-capture work in the lead, Rise created a visionary new approach to the classic franchise.

However, 2014 release Dawn of the Planet of the Apes managed to be the rare sequel to improve upon its predecessor, creating more thrilling action and suspense and an even more character-driven tale of the emerging battle between apes and humanity. That film’s director, Matt Reeves, is back for War for the Planet of the Apes, and the film is already being hailed as a modern masterpiece.

Wish Upon (Release Date: July 14)

“Be careful what you wish for” is an adage that horror films have explored before, but Wish Upon aims to breathe new life into the cost of getting everything you want. Joey King (The Conjuring) stars as a young woman who receives a mysterious music box from her father and soon finds her world torn apart by a series of bloody repercussions.

Director John R. Leonetti previously led another film about a cursed keepsake, 2014 Conjuring spinoff Annabelle, into a massive hit to the tune of $257 million worldwide. With few other horror films in theaters this summer, Wish Upon may be able to capitalize on audiences thirsty for scares and deliver a fun, terrifying thrill ride unlike anything playing right now.

Check out the latest trailer for Wish Upon.

Lady Macbeth (Release Date: July 14)

Directed by William Oldroyd, this period drama is based on Nikolai Leskov’s novel Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and stars Florence Pugh as a young bride sold into a marriage to a middle-age suitor (Paul Hilton), only to wind up in a torrid affair with a worker (Cosmo Jarvis) on their estate in 19th century rural England.

Lady Macbeth — which arrives in limited release this month — may not be traditional summer fare, but nevertheless, it may be worth seeking out for those moviegoers open to a strong period drama. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall and has maintained an impressive smattering of positive reviews ever since.

Dunkirk (Release Date: July 21)

He’s told stories about memory-impaired investigators, caped crusaders, dueling magicians, dream heists, and space travel. Yet, despite all that, Christopher Nolan has never made a war film. That’s about to change with Dunkirk, as the writer/director takes on the tale of the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the titular French beach in 1940.

With an ensemble cast that includes Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, James D’Arcy, Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance, the film promises to demonstrate Nolan’s meticulous approach to narrative storytelling. Confirmation that the film would be a taut 107 minutes has only boosted anticipation among fans, as it means that Nolan’s latest may be just as fast-paced and intense as the war effort it is depicting.

Check out the latest trailer for Dunkirk.

Girls Trip (Release Date: July 21)

Last month’s Rough Night didn’t exactly light the box office on fire, but the similarly themed Girls Trip — which also follows a group of vacationing women on a comedic adventure — may prove to be a bigger draw. Starring Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and Tiffany Haddish, the film is taking on far lighter subject matter and much broader laughs than last month’s other R-rated female comedy.

In addition, director Malcolm D. Lee has a proven track record for delivering hits, especially more recently. Films like Barbershop: The Next Cut and The Best Man Holiday saw the filmmaker balance ensemble casts with an equal measure of comedy and heart. Armed with a script co-written by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, we expect Girls Trip to keep that tradition alive.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Release Date: July 21)

Luc Besson has some truly unforgettable films under his belt. In particular, Léon: The Professional and The Fifth Element prove that he has one of the most distinctive voices of any filmmaker today. Yet, his directorial efforts extend from missed opportunities to true classics. With its wholehearted commitment to the otherworldly, it’s unclear where Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will fit.

Based on the French sci-fi comic series Valérian and Laureline, the film stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as a pair of operatives sent to a sprawling metropolis to investigate a looming threat. Whether Besson’s film is a rollicking space adventure or a misfire of Jupiter Ascending proportions remains to be seen, but at least we can expect that Besson’s vision will be unlike anything else we’ve seen lately.

Atomic Blonde (Release Date: July 28)

As John Wick: Chapter 2 proved earlier this year, there are few things action films love more than sleek production design and frenetic fight choreography. Needless to say, director David Leith — who co-directed the original John Wick with Chapter 2‘s Chad Stahelski — looks to bring the same panache and style to Charlize Theron’s badass turn in action thriller Atomic Blonde.

Based on the 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, the film stars Theron as an MI6 agent tasked with unraveling the mystery behind the death of an undercover agent in the late 1980s. James McAvoy co-stars as the offbeat associate she partners with for the case, and early word is that the film is a solid thrill ride that may jumpstart a franchise all its own.

Check out the latest trailer for Atomic Blonde.

Brigsby Bear (Release Date: July 28)

Saturday Night Live‘s Kyle Mooney co-wrote and stars in this comedy/drama about a young man who emerges from captivity to discover the children’s show he grew up with was invented by his captor. So he sets out to make a film about the show’s titular character and spread the message he learned growing up. Now director Dave McCary (also of SNL fame) brings Brigsby Bear to select theaters this month.

So far the film has garnered near universal acclaim from critics since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Though Mooney is untested as a cinematic lead, the film’s strong supporting cast — which includes Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Andy Samberg and Greg Kinnear — and its tragicomic tone could help it gain word of mouth and become a breakout indie hit this summer.

Check out the latest trailer for Brigsby Bear.

July looks like it will feature a balanced blend of smaller, more intimate films and major studio fare. So audiences hungry for a particular type of storytelling should find plenty to enjoy in the weeks ahead. While Spider-Man: Homecoming is likely to emerge as the month’s big winner, the monstrous positive buzz surrounding War for the Planet of the Apes may help Caesar topple the webslinger. Moreover, we’re interested to see if Dunkirk will be another hit for Christopher Nolan and whether Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will prove to be the visionary sci-fi tale fans of director Luc Besson are hoping for. We’ll find out soon enough.

Wonder Woman 2 May Be Set In The '80s, With One Major Twist

Warning: SPOILERS for Wonder Woman are ahead!

While Wonder Woman was bookended with scenes featuring the heroine in the present day the majority of the movie turned its gaze to the past, when Diana of Themyscira was fighting in World War I. With development on Wonder Woman 2 now underway, Patty Jenkins (who hasn't officially signed on to direct the sequel yet) has expressed interest in keeping the next movie set in the past rather than in the modern era. Well if a new report is to be believed, moviegoers may see Diana adventuring in the 1980s for her next solo movie, but what's even weirder is that she could reunite with Steve Trevor.

Supposedly Wonder Woman 2 will be another prequel set before the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but this time we'll see Diana going up against the Soviet Union as the Cold War is on its last legs. Screen Rant also reported that Chris Pine, who signed a multi-picture deal when he joined the DC Extended Universe, will reprise Steve Trevor, although the website did not provide details on this is possible given that Steve died in Wonder Woman.

Although Patty Jenkins previously implied she was considering setting Wonder Woman 2 around the 1930s, the 1980s would also be a good setting for a sequel. It's long enough away from World War I that you imagine that Diana has changed considerably, but leaving enough time for her to evolve further before meeting Batman and Superman. Plus, putting Diana behind Soviet lines is a great way to give audiences a thrilling, espionage-themed superhero movie.

As for Steve Trevor miraculously returning, that's harder to swallow. In Wonder Woman, Steve sacrificed himself to prevent Doctor Poison's gas from being dispersed across London, and it was his death that ultimately pushed her to defeat Ares. While resurrecting characters is common in the world of superheroes, bringing Steve back from the dead would be an odd creative decision. On the slim chance he didn't die in the plane explosion, then you would not only have to explain why he is still alive in the 1980s and still looks youthful, but again, there's also the problem of diluting the emotional impact of his sacrifice.

Assuming this Wonder Woman 2 information is correct, what could end up happening is that Chris Pine would not be playing the Steve Trevor that we met in Wonder Woman, but one of his descendants. Fans of the 1970s Wonder Woman TV series will remember that Lyle Waggoner originally played Steve Trevor in Season 1, which was set in World War II, and when the show jumped forward to the 1970s in Season 2, Waggoner stayed on as Steve Trevor Jr. Perhaps something similar could happen in the DCEU, and the Steve Trevor Pine is playing this time is either a grandson (it's possible Steve the First could have fathered a child sometime before the Great War began) or a great-nephew. The Trevor lineage can continue, and it wouldn't affect the noble decision the original Steve made.

Wonder Woman is still playing in theaters, and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news about Wonder Woman 2 as it comes in.

Baywatch Bomb Is a Big Hit in Germany Thanks to David Hasselhoff

Baywatch may have been seen as a domestic flop, but in Germany, the land of David Hasselhoff, the movie is kicking some box office butt. Baywatch, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, has only scored a disappointing $57.6 million domestically so far, which isn't ideal for a movie that cost at least $69 million to make and probably a decent amount more to market. But the R-rated Baywatch movie has been able to rally up over $100 million globally, with a healthy chunk of the global success, $16 million thus far, coming from the country where David Hasselhoff is still considered to be a huge star: Germany.

The news comes to us via Dwayne Johnson's Instagram account. In the post, Johnson is elated sharing the global success of the Baywatch movie, calling out Germany in particular. The actor had this to say.

"Nice surprise. Thank you, Germany. After 5 weeks, Baywatch moves up the international charts!? Crazy sauce. This kind of global success for a lil' R-rated, raunchy comedy is very rare in Hollywood. We make movies for the world to enjoy... so thank you world for enjoying our lil' beach raunch romp. Love U back Germany. And Mexico. And France. And everywhere else I'm not mentioning because I have to go back to working out and a brotha can't lose his pump."

The news isn't too surprising since the Baywatch television series was insanely popular in Germany. It's also worth noting that David Hasselhoff still has a thriving singing career in Germany and he makes a cameo in the movie. Coincidence? I think not.

Apparently the German love affair with David Hasselhoff all started because of the 1980's television series Knight Rider, a show in which Hasselhoff starred and drove a talking car that helped him solve crimes. But that's not all, Hasselhoff's rock album, Knight Rocker (yes) became a number one sensation in nearby Austria and followed to Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Hasselhoff continues to release albums and the Germans continue to buy them, but nobody is quite sure why, even the Hoff himself who famously claimed that his debut sold 7 copies stateside.

Hasselhoff's popularity was enough to make the Baywatch TV series a hit overseas, especially in Germany. Apparently German fans loved how "American" the show was along with other things that did a lot of bouncing up and down. The popularity overseas was enough to launch it into syndication in the United States, which was miraculous because the show wasn't that popular in America yet. Reportedly, in order to make the deal work, Hasselhoff took a lesser salary per-episode in trade for a greater share of the profits if the show became a hit.

Baywatch the movie owes quite a bit to Mr. David Hasselhoff who fought tooth and nail for what he believed in nearly 30 years ago with the Baywatch TV series. Hoff's passion and sacrifice laid the groundwork for the R-rated Baywatch movie to achieve a rare feat overseas and that fact should not be overlooked. Beautiful women and nudity might have had a hand in the success too, but it's much too early to speculate about such things. Baywatch is still floating in theaters if you feel like checking out what all of the Germans are talking about.

Universal Thinks There Will Be “At Least Three More” FAST & FURIOUSMovies

Furious 7 (2015) Poster
It’s rare that a film franchise makes it to its sixth or seventh entry, and even rarer that the latter films end up being more successful than what came before.  But that’s exactly what has happened with the Fast & Furious franchise, which hit a high mark with the excellent Fast Five at $626 million worldwide and went even higher with Fast & Furious 6’s worldwide gross of $788 million.  The next film, Furious 7, is due out in April with high expectations, but the series suffered a major loss late last year when star Paul Walker sadly passed away.  Recently, word surfaced that director Justin Lin—who helmed entries 3 through 6—might be returning to the franchise for a multi-film wrap up that will bring the series to a close.
Now Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley has weighed in on the end of the franchise, saying she envisions it continuing on for at least three more films.  More after the jump.
Speaking to THR in part of a roundtable interview with fellow studio heads, Langley addressed where she sees the end of the road for Fast & Furious:
“We think there’s at least three more. Paul is, and always will be, an integral part of the story. But there are many other great characters, and it’s also an opportunity to introduce new characters. I think it’s still a growing franchise. We’ll see what happens with Furious 7, obviously, but our box office has grown over the past three or four films and internationally, in particular. So we think that there’s more to mine there. But we’re of course very mindful about fatigue.”
Three more movies would, of course, stretch the Fast & Furious franchise to 10 films, which is kind of amazing.  When watching The Fast and the Furious for the first time in 2001, I never would have guessed that I was witnessing the beginning of a major movie series.  Obviously the box office performance dictates how far Fast & Furious stretches, but if these past few films have been any indication, the grosses are going up, up, up, which means Universal will work hard to keep this thing going for as long as possible.
What do you think about the prospect of Fast & Furious continuing on through Fast & Furious 10 or more?  Do you think 10 is a good number?  Should the series end sooner now that Walker is gone?  Sound off in the comments below.

Watch Fast and Furious7 Trailer plus pictures shared by Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel continues to be the official public ambassador for Fast & Furious 7, and now he’s sharing a few new images from the film.  The tumultuous production faced innumerable hurdles following the tragic death of star Paul Walker in November, but now the finish line is in sight with director James Wan deep in post-production.  And there’s now a trailer, which Diesel recently saw and flipped for.  So hopefully we’ll see that soon.

Diesel posted the following response to the trailer on his Facebook Page:
Universal came to visit, to show the trailer for FF7…
Speechless… yeah, it was that INCREDIBLE!
I must also say, that it was emotional and bittersweet… we all went above and beyond to make Pablo proud, but man, I wish he could see what we have created and just how far we have come.
